Charismata

Dear Fellow Charismatics and Pentecostals

You have been filled with His Holy Spirit for some time now, and with godly sorrow realize that you still have real inward spiritual challenges to struggle with from time to time.  Some of you, almost all the time....  By now you have probably gathered that the purpose of this website is to open the door to a further lowly work of foundational grace that will supernaturally stabilize your human spirit and your relationship with Him by removing all cause for struggle. This peerless and unshakable inward stability then allows you to make far better use of your existing Faith and Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Those inward challenges are totally removed when He separates you unto Himself. You come to live in a different dimension- His dimension!!  It was Him in you; now it also becomes you in Him. Hid in Him. Truly this is Christianity as it was originally designed to be!!!

This marvelous new functionality will allow you to enjoy all those wonderful scriptures of promise as a solid present reality.  This is the full manifestation of the promised supernatural “whole armour of God” and “breastplate of righteousness” of Ephesians 6:13-18.  Palpable daily assets are yours rather than mere words and hope. When your time of testing comes you want to be able to stand easily and matter-of -factly say with the Lord:  "the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me”.  John 14:30  Nothing!  For He has made my heart wondrously whole and pure!!!

The early Pentecostals walked in this. but we were robbed......

Did you know that a walk in His Rest was considered a pre-requisite to be filled with the Spirit by the first Pentecostals at Azusa Street and before?  Seymour considered that the heart needed to be first made clean in entire sanctification in order to be able to receive His Holy Spirit.  This made full sense to him since that is how these blessings had worked for him.  He had walked in His Rest for years prior to His Spirit and tongues being preached. When he heard tongues preached , he received it.  So naturally, he preached it that way.  And that is exactly how the the first Pentecostals received it in glorious radiant practice.

It was only later that they came to observe that  some would be filled with the Spirit and speak in tongues before entering His Rest!  This confusing observation needed time to be understood because Seymour was so busy with the relentless demands to minister accross the continent.

Read this astonishing newly researched history of our Pentecostal roots by church historian Jim Kerwin of the "Parbar Westward" website. (see the "Links" page)  Fasten your seat belt.  It is a wild ride!!
Apparently, the original infant Pentecostal Movement under Parham and Seymour that saw scores of souls enter His Rest as well as speak in tongues, was boldly kidnapped and force-fed poison by convincing novices who did not wait for doctrine to catch up with the spectacular new experiences. Apparently, they had all the answers...
The infant movement was then ignorantly trampled under foot by a stampede of newcomers who had not even heard of the glorious reality of a wholly clean heart in this life. As a result, few of them ever did get to hear of it...
Today's descendants of this momentous early debacle actually consider it "normal" to co-exist with inward struggles and a tendency towards further acts of sin! They do not even know of the blameless glory they are missing!!!
Jim walks us through these important events of our genesis step-by-step to show us how we came from such glory to embrace today's mixed blessing.   The Rejected Blessing     This is a "Must-read".

The Apostolic Faith  click on "newpapers" to see the original 1906 newsmagazine reports of the beginning of the Pentecost revivals at http://www.dunamai.com (one of the sources of "The "Rejected Blessing")

These deficent roots have had alarming consequences for us all, and continue to do so. Our God is a jealous God. He requires us to serve Him with our whole hearts. Few really understand the issues around this principle, and so even fewer apply them. Many sincerely strive to do so but few succeed in His eyes.  If you are a leader, you should aware of what is happening as a result of the widespread failure in this.  Consequences

You must understand. that His Rest, like salvation, is a foundational "mystery".
 Foundational means it is  essential. Fundamental. Elementary. If you do not possess it, you can only have a partial grasp upon what the original "primitive" Pentecost was all about. Without it, something essential is still missing in your experience.  It is a serious beginning step into His further wonders untold and untellable: for they are hidden upon a yet unseen Tableland.
 "Mystery" means you cannot possibly see it because you first have to be taken there by the Father!  A "mystery" is beyond prior understanding, no matter how hard you try, but when you live there you gradually become aware of the blessed nature of the priveleged new dimension that you inhabit.  Still, prior learning, though it is "through a glass darkly", builds faith and removes many of the difficulties that surround your actual entering in..

  "Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it."  Hebrews 4:1  Settling short of His Best is called "compromise" and is a serious error that sorely disappoints Him. It also places you in unnecessary danger.

Foundational ministers are called to minister these foundations to us by a supernaturally living word and by a supernaturally lowly example.  For this reason, they too must be faithful to enter in. How else can we follow?  But how can they give us what they do not have?  O woe upon woe!!

O but yes, we can still receive what they have not yet obtained -for we follow Him and faithfully intercede that perhaps our leaders will follow our radiant example. After we obtain His tender Lamb-eyes and this obvious new radiance, we will remain patient in earnest prayer for their benefit....

 "Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.  Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful." 1 Cor. 4:1-2

Are You Hot for God?
It is essential that you are, just as it is essential that the blacksmith keeps his smithy white-hot by keeping that old bellows a-pumping while he is working. If he does not, the iron will be too cool to hammer into shape!
If you are driving a car it is essential that you diligently use of one of it's most insignificant parts. If you do not press the gas pedal as necessary you will get exactly nowhere.
And that is why you must make proper use of the smallest of gifts while seeking Him for more.  The gift of tongues works just like the gas pedal or the bellows, in that it allows you the choice to keep your anointing stirred up within. All else follows this.
I have observed for years that I can have personal revival all the time, regardless of how dry others around me choose to be. It is not a matter of prayer, prayer meetings, programs, sermons, or revelations. O yes, these certainly may encourage, but the real difference is made if you keep your Holy Spirit stirred up to white heat within by using your prayer language in secret. If you do this, others just may catch it also -and then it can be group happening. But if not, that is fine too, because at least you will be walking in a joyous revival that pleases God......
Over the years I have seen that those who neglect this principle seldom do especially well in spiritual things. Spiritual hunger is so very important. God will give you all that you are willing to fervently ask for. He will not try to force His affections upon you since He loves you even more than you love yourself.

  "Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands."  2 Timothy 1:6

Part I  The Unveiling

Once a soul enters His Rest, there is some real adapting to do!

"There are three levels of souls within His Rest.  The first sits cautiously on the restful banks of the Jordan in the shade of a fruitful bough where he can leisurely view his former land.  The second type of soul is allowing any remaining distracting earthly attachments to fall away, so that his eyes rest on Him alone.   The third is enraptured within His vast and extravagant Purposes."  (see the non-Charismatic heritage article   Possessing The Land    for more quiet detail.) (excerpted from "Golden Sheaves" in the "Wisdom for Ministers" section.)

If this same hidden soul is also passionately and sacrificially "poured out" in His Holy Spirit, so that his or her every breathe is filled with His Glory and His Prayer, both awake and asleep, then we see a mature Son being rapidly formed. His personal spirit is now One with His far vaster Spirit.  For this soul,  Jesus' prayer has just been answered:

 "that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22  "And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23  "I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me." John 17:21-23 NKJV
Enclosed in this short section we find a few rare concrete examples of recent souls that give evidence that they were simultaneously walking in this third and  highest form of both His Rest and His Spirit.  These are forerunners worthy of the name.  These have recaptured their measure of the unconquerable lowly life of the leaders of the early church.  These are truly dread warriors and hidden champions that have shaken the earth and changed their age.

These are worthy stewards of the full and original measure of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire.
O Lord: send us more of these deliverers.................

  Smith Wigglesworth
"It has been recorded that Smith Wigglesworth raised 23 people from the dead in total, over the years of his ministry."  He was a most extraordinary man: he first obtained entire sanctification and then years later embraced the Pentecostal blessing, early on while it was still being preached along with Holiness. He then  proceeded to pour out both without limit for the rest of his days regardless of many great hindrances. He was a major pioneer in establishing the Pentecostal Movement.         7 pages by A. Strom

Twice Endued
Smith Wigglesworth tells of when he was endued with entire sanctification and years later when he is again endued- but this time with the newly re-discovered Pentecostal blessing of  His Spirit. In today's deficient version of Pentecost, only very rare souls have yet embraced both the supernatural purity and the supernatural power that make up the completed Baptism. For this reason, we must pay very close attention to these few exemplars we have for what a Christian was originally created to be. (of course, not all who enter this place will have Smith's remarkable gift of healing)                      -a 4 page excerpt from the book "Smith Wigglesworth Apostle of Faith' by Stanley Frodsham -with my comments included. Earnest Seeker

  Wigglesworth's Secret
The secrets of Wigglesworth's awesome spiritual strength are assessed. "He saw that the source of Christ's mightiest miracles was His wonderful compassion. Tears would stream from his eyes as he beheld the sin-scarred souls and the sickness-wrecked bodies. He burned in his zeal to undo the works of the devil, and was positively aggressive as he tried to emulate his Master in going about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil."  -11 pages by Stanley Frodsham -with my comments included.

 The Key to Wigglesworth
This authour reaches to reveal for us the keys to Wigglesworth's brutally solid faith. "Wigglesworth knew that without holiness, no man can see the Lord (Heb. 12:14), so with all his heart, he sought holiness. There was no “shilly-shallying, no playing games, no pretense. He meant to see God. (Matt. 5:8.) One of his great joys in the baptism of the Holy Spirit (that includes entire sanctification) was the sense of cleansing. He had a vision of an empty cross and Jesus glorified. He cried out in ecstasy, “Clean, clean, clean."   -18 pages by George Stormont -with my comments included.

 Sanctification of the Spirit
In May 1922, Wiggleworth preached this revolutionary sermon on the place of entire sanctification in the Pentecostal believer's life.  We now must  take the opportunity to follow this path that was recklessly buried by the ignorant new Pentecostals of that time.  They did not comprehend that the choice to ignore their glorious heritage of Holiness meant the implicit embracing of compromise and mixture with all the attending dark consequences..... -7 pages from the Appendix of  “Wigglesworth: A Man Who Walked With God" by George Stormont -with my comments included.

Lake and Wigglesworth Compared    You will find both of these remarkable souls to be extremely challenging, however you will find that Lake handles words and doctrines better while the unschooled Wigglesworth was famed for tears, devotion and astonishingly brutal raw power.
Before God apprehended Wigglesworth, he was a shy and uneducated plumber in England.  Lake's natural talents, on the other hand had advanced him to become a wealthy developer and financier working on Wall Street!!!
Wigglesworth was further disadvantaged by biographers who did not at all understand his sanctity. He was not especially literate, did no writing for himself and read only the Bible. The educated Lake on the other hand, wrote his own material, and wrote it well. For these reasons we have a much better record of Lake's briefer pilgrimage.
Both Wigglesworth (1859-1946) and Lake (1870-1935) were filled with the Spirit in 1907- just before the enemy sidetracked and hamstrung the infant Pentecostal movement.  ( see Azusa Street Timeline and  The Rejected Blessing  )
Instantaneous heart-cleansing had been preached by Wesley since 1725, calling it "entire sanctification" or "Christian Perfection".  The subsequent Holiness Movement applied the term "Baptism with the Holy Spirit" to it. Wigglesworth had heard of and  received this years before 1907, and when the same term first came to be applied to tongues and gifts, he aggressively pressed in to obtain those as well.
The younger Lake, on the other hand, heard it preached as containing both  heart cleansing and the pentecostal gifts, and so he simply received it as such.  He received both blessings in one sitting -and had a gift of healing added as well because he was believing for that also!

 Was this how the apostles and the earnest seekers of the primitive church received and then preached the Baptism in the Spirit and Fire?

From the Diary of John G. Lake
 John G. Lake's diary  tells us exactly  how he entered His Rest and was Baptized in the Spirit. Observe that both of these post-salvation upgrades came to him in one grand package!  Afterwards the Lord then struggled with him until he vowed to serve only His purposes in this life.  This was no easy thing, for his successful Christian business faithfully helped meet the needs of many. "Every student of the primitive church discerns at once a distinction between the soul of the primitive Christian and the soul of the modern Christian. It lies in the spirit of Christ dominion."      5 pages by John G. Lake  -annotated by Earnest Seeker

The Healer: Dr. John G. Lake

Here is John G. Lake's remarkable biography.  7 pages compiled by Roberts Liardon

Baptism in the Holy Ghost
 This an early sermon that presents the Baptism with the Holy Spirit and Holiness.
"This cleansing from inbred sin - the nature of sin, the carnal mind, the old man, the man of sin, etc. - is the actual taking out of our breast the desire for acts of sin. All correspondence with sin in us is severed, and the carnal life is laid as a sacrifice on the altar of Christ in glad surrender by us. This inner heart-cleansing that John and the disciples of Jesus demanded before they would baptize a man is the necessary preparation for baptism of the Holy Ghost. A holy God must have a holy dwelling place. O! wondrous salvation, wondrous Christ, wondrous atonement. Man born in sin, shapen in iniquity, forgiven, cleansed, purified outside and inside by the blood of Jesus, and made the habitation (dwelling place) of God."     (See above! - Lake preached it just the same way Seymour did!)     8 pages by John G. Lake with an Epilogue by Earnest Seeker

The Holy Ghost Made Manifest

Whew!!!  These burning hot pages of interpretation of tongues make clear the complete thrust of Lake's ministry. You would be best served to save this trumpet call to read prayerfully on your knees. 3 pages by the Holy Ghost...

A Letter to Charles H. Parham

Here is a copy of a remarkable ministry letter that Lake wrote in 1927 to Charles H. Parham, the recognized founder of modern pentecostalism. It gives us some idea of the behind the scenes struggle in those hectic days of joy and success. 5 pages by John G. Lake  (The import of this letter is better understood within the context of "The Rejected Blessing" found earlier on this page. )

Sermons from the Burning Heart of John G. Lake
  I have so many of his wonderful sermons that I have listed them on a special page.  Enjoy!!

In summary then, both Wigglesworth and Lake:
  • were granted pardon for sins in the work of initial salvation
  • laid down their all to enter a supernatural purity of heart in His Rest
  • had their already indwelling Holy Spirit gloriously released for active working in their life and ministry
  • pressed in by faith to receive and use their spectacular spiritual giftings
  • kept the pedal to the metal as they ought, to stay poured out for God and His service
  • had enough health, intelligence and freedom from circumstance to apply the above with energy
  • in retrospect they both realized that ministered healings fade, while a gift of the glorious purity within His Rest remains and increases in fruitfulness evermore.

Note: not all gifts are spectacular, and not all otherwise qualified vessels have the health and intelligence necessary for effective service.  Some vessels are kept aside to be sovereignly released at a certain season in the Spirit.  His rewards are for simply stewarding what He has given, whether that is little or much.

The Anatomy of Deception
 Many old charismatic soldiers, instead of rejoicing, have been crying out, "where is the beef?"  ....
"As we explore that, maybe we need also to ask about the validity of the whole charismatic phenomenon, whether we in fact have an authentic baptism in the Holy Spirit, and indeed whether we have been born again of the Spirit.  Or have we been, from beginning to end, inducted into one of the most colossal deceptions that has ever been perpetrated in the religious world and all history?”   By Art Katz

 I wish I had some depth of understanding of currently prominent figures like Reinhard Bonnke and Benny Hinn.  If you have personal contact with such people, or know where they are at in these spiritual dimensions, please drop me an e-mail at:     Earnest Seeker     Or perhaps you could just draw their attention to this website material and see how they react. They might just surprise you! Most of the invaluable material on this website is just now seeing the light of day after being buried in attics for many decades. It took the power of digital tools to release it from the midst of endless reams of moldy paper, and the power of the web to distribute it.

Part II  Selected Visions and Teachings of His Rest

I Saw The Line in the Sand

The lukewarm is coming to an end.
God is beginning to separate the precious from the vile and in this, the pure word of God will spring forth with a vengeance and will begin to expose many lies. God’s remnant will begin to turn to that which is pure.
Revival will come and this is what it will take – A Holy people – consecrated to a Holy God – speaking forth the unadulterated pure word of God, bringing truth to a dying world, and many will be set free. 2 pages by Lynn Clark

Higher Expectations
"Timely Instruction to The Zadok Priesthood"
The Lord is looking for a people whose heart is right with Him, so that He can fully support all that they are doing (see 2 Chronicles 16:9). The Spirit of Truth is raising up leaders that will teach the people the vast difference between what is pure and what is profane (see Ezekiel 44:23). It is crucial that we walk in uprightness if we are to ascend the hill of the Lord (see Psalms. 24:3-4).
As we embrace accountability then we can be trusted with more true authority. Christ Jesus informed us that if we are faithful over little, we will become ruler over much more. On the other hand if we fail to handle small things correctly, even the small things are in danger of being removed. It is required of a steward that he be found faithful.   3 pages by Bobby Connor

The Word to be Released in This Season
 These Zadok priests were not allowed to wear anything that caused them to sweat. This is because theirs is a ministry of rest in the secret place. They also were bestowed with an anointing to teach and to rule:  (Eze 44:23 KJV+) "And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean."   5 pages by Christine Beadsworth

The Mystery of Sonship
"The whole concept of ‘sonship in its true and biblical sense has been lost to us in modern times" "As long as we remain in a place where resurrection is only a doctrine, which regrettably describes the majority of Christians, then we are still children. It is only when resurrection is our experience that the Father is released to declare the decree: “This is My son or daughter.” by Art Katz  12 pages   ***

 The Lake Called Serenity
I personally cherish this beauteous vision of His Holiness.  "The water was a deep, azure blue and there was no hidden menace or undercurrent to it. It reflected the perfect Peace of the Savior. I immediately understood that its depths were unfathomable, as it was a reflection of the One who sustains the Universe by His powerful Word. The tenderness of the Savior surrounded this place and I felt absorbed in His beauty and peace. Unity permeated the atmosphere and Grace, Goodness and loving-kindness abounded."  Catherine Brown   2 pages  ***

 The Apostolic Ministry of John G. Lake
"A ministry of perfection is coming to the church that will prepare her for the return of the Bridegroom.  Sometimes we have to examine the past in order to understand what He is doing today."  "Lake discerned that his generation missed the mark by not realizing the true definition of apostolic ministry."  "...the people were absorbed in the phenomena of God and not in the person of God."    8 pages by P.  Preparing for His Presence
"We can only bear His Presence when we have come before Him according to His prescribed manner...adorned in the garments provided for us through His redemption. Many in the Body of Christ have been experiencing this sanctifying work. This process is typically illustrated through the Levitical priesthood and the meticulous procedure followed by the High Priest before entering the Most Holy Place."                                                Bob Jones And Keith Davis   5 pages

 Put on Christ
"If we put on the Holy array then there will be no sin or ambition in our motives. If we do not learn from history then we will be doomed to repeat it. Many anointed leaders fell because they had not completely clothed themselves in Christ."  Keith Davis and Bob Jones  4 pages

 Sons of Fresh Oil
"What might it mean for us to be Sons of fresh oil? What is it to have gifts that are touched with fresh oil? Oh how we need servants who produce light and not smoke in this time. How we need light bearers born from the very presence of God, who glisten when crushed and whose broken lives of service express the glow of the gospel!" 3 pages by Robert I.  Sobering Facts About Miracle Ministry
On this web page there are plenty of carrots to motivate us to enter His Rest.  But here is a stick from the past.  This recounts what happened when there were miracles without the miracle ministers being established in Holiness during the "Voice of Healing" era of the fifties. ..  Sobering indeed!   Let's not do this again!!!!!    2 pages by Larry Magnello

Solemn Prophetic Warnings
The Lord gave Stanley Frodsham, authour of, "Smith Wigglesworth: Apostle of Faith" this Word in 1965.  He had just finished observing the appalling carnality that ended the careers of the "Voice of Healing" evangelists of the fifties ( see above). This was in response to an era dominated by unsanctified miracle ministers lusting for name and fame. This solemn prophetic warning with it's serious call to holiness is even more current now.  Today's future leaders must take this to heart for extremely few have yet entered His promised and necessary Rest.   6 pages by Stanley Frodsham

False Prophets

Although it is all the vogue today, prophesying is still exceedingly serious business in the Spirit realm. Art explores the relationship between the state of the heart, the word  of revelation, and the enduring consequences of these upon the end times. 3 pages by Art Katz

Radiant Christianity
"To be a joyful, radiant Christian one must hate sin and love righteousness. As we saw earlier, Jesus was exalted to the very throne of His Father because of His abhorrence of evil and His attachment to the standard of holiness: "You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy" (Hebrews 1:9). Concludes with a legend which will serve to illustrate quite well what happens when we pay the price to live a radiant life.  3 pages by Ralph I. Tilley

 The Harness of The Lord
This is Bill Britton's classic vision of those who enter the secret place of the Most High. Discipline and submission have their exceedingly great reward! It was pulled by six large horses, two in the lead, two in the middle, and two in the rear."  3 pages by Bill Britton

Attributes of Third Heaven Visitation

"As we have pointed out in numerous writings, we believe this generation is on the threshold of experiencing a spiritual restoration that will equate in its prominence with the recovery of the Jewish people to the land of Israel.  The Scriptures referring to this day and the various signs of the times explicitly point to this reality."  The restoration of His Rest is a key part of this.    5 pages by Paul Keith Davis
Zion
“He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge his floor.” Matt 3:11b-12a.
Multitudes have received the infilling of the Holy Spirit and have spoken in tongues. But they have not tarried until the “fire” comes to purge and purify them. As this coal of fire comes and touches us, we will be transformed. There will come within us a quality that will have a spiritual “ring” to it.

ANZAC Dreams and Visions Supersite
Australians and New Zealanders are forced to take a wide global view upon issues since they are so very far away from the rest of us.  For this reason, amongst others, this website is exceptionally good. I am on their prophetic E-mail list, and find it the most informative one I receive....It has no hype!

Do you want more?  Go to these large websites and sift through their long lists of prophecies, and prophetic websites.  Some of these have search capabilities, so you can use the keywords, “rest”, “sanctification”, or “holiness”, and find any number of additional words and visions that refer to His Rest.  If you find any really special ones, send them on to me!!

But a word of warning: a mixed vision that puffs up is popular these days.  Many will encourage you to develop "your gifts" or "your ministry".  This would be unquestionably wholesome if one first entered His Rest to remove the remaining admixture of fallen self-consciousness.  As you are quite aware that this seldom happens, so eat the meat and spit out the bones!  Any mixture you now embrace will just have to be repented of later on after it delays your entry into His necessary Rest.  His Rest is foundational; that means it comes first.  It builds up. It stabilizes. Any other thing will come as smooth as silk when your foundations are truly readied for it. It will also remain.  Earnest Seeker

  Be Filled with the Holy Spirit

THE RHYME OF THE MODERN PARISHIONER

by Dr. Michael L. Brown

It happened in the vestibule
At ten one Sunday morn;
A haggard-looking church-goer
Sat plaintive and forlorn.

Then suddenly he rose and found
A hungry-looking Christian;
He took his hand, took him aside,
And asked him a straight question:

“You’ve read the Word; you know the Book;
The promises are clear.
But have you seen the living God?
Have you found Him here?

Have you experienced holy fire
The Spirit in His power,
A mighty wave, a rushing wind,
A flame that does devour?

Is there something more you’re seeking,
So high, so wide, so deep?
Do you find yourself frustrated?
Is church putting you to sleep?

Then listen well, your heart is ripe;
My tale I will tell.
This story is your story too,
And it’s your tale as well.

For thirty years I’ve been in church,
It seemed like a good show.
But now I’ve got to meet with God --
Do you know where to go?

I’m trapped in mundane worship times,
The praises have grown cold;
The preaching’s dry and dusty,
The teaching stale like mold!

Each service feels like a rerun,
The songs all sound the same;
The prophecies are so hollow --
Not worthy of the name!

Words, more words -- they’re everywhere,
But oh there is a stink!
Words, more words -- they’re everywhere,
But none to make us think!

We lack the heavenly Presence,
It’s clear we’re in a rut;
I’m desperate for revival --
It burns within my gut!

I’m love-sick for my Jesus,
So hungry for my Lord;
Just longing for my Savior;
God knows that I’m so bored!

Is there someone who can help me,
Who’s touched the real thing?
A man who’s heard from heaven --
With a word from God to bring?

Are there prophets burning with fire,
Servants who are ablaze?
Anointed and overflowing,
Appointed for these days?

Do they carry the Spirit’s burden,
And breathe the Lord God’s breath?
Are they set apart and holy,
Obedient to death?

I hear the words of  the Master,
‘Come follow Me,’ He said.
If some Christians go their own way;
I’ll go with Him instead!

Oh please, don’t do as I have done,
And waste so many years.
Don’t wait and wait for endless months;
Move on! Outgrow your fears!

Forget the twelve step programs;
A seminar won’t do.
You need a touch from heaven,
To fill you through and through.

There must be change in your life --
A work of God that’s real.
Don’t fool yourself with worn clichés --
Don’t let the devil steal!

Don’t miss out on God’s presence
Or let these hours pass;
Don’t stop your soul from hungering;
Get out of the morass!

Dear friend, you are not crazy;
Dear saint, you are not mad;
There really is a problem,
It’s true, you have been had!

There’s more! There’s more! Believe it!
There is that place in God.
There are holy visitations,
New paths that must be trod.

Will you get up like old Pilgrim,
And seek that better way?
Will you go forth on that journey
No matter what men say?

Will you go out now and meet Him,
And leave the crowd behind,
Forsaking dead traditions,
If Jesus you will find?

It’s not in another meeting,
A nicely packaged hour;
Another harmless service,
Devoid of heaven’s power.

It’s not in another teaching,
Three points to fill your head.
The Word is always vibrant;
But this stuff is so dead!

We need God to send His Spirit,
To fully take control,
To transform every member,
To come and make them whole!

Enough with man’s religion;
Enough with earthly plans;
Enough with our new programs;
Produced by fleshly hands.”

Just then in strode the pastor
His calling to fulfill;
Just doing his weekly duty --
Then he became frozen still.

For astir was that parishioner
He grasped the preacher’s clothes,
And grasped the preacher’s soul as well --
And in that grasp he froze.

“Oh pastor, enter the prayer room
And shut yourself inside.
Be emptied of competition,
And crucify your pride!

Pray for holy visitations,
Caught up alone with Him,
Consumed with heavenly vision --
That’s where you must begin!

You won’t find Him in a textbook,
Buried on page twenty-two.
He is the living God who acts --
He wants to move in you!

It’s not only the ‘apostles’
He’ll bless and send and use;
He will saturate your own soul,
If you will not refuse.

So arise, get up, pursue Him,
Jesus your true best Friend!
He is worthy of devotion,
He’s faithful to the end!

Why should you starve on crusty bread,
And crawl along the ground?
Your Savior is your source of life,
Seek Him, let joy abound!

Renew your life, refresh your heart,
Press in, take hold, pray through.
Put first things first, make God your goal;
What else have you to do?

Your Bible schooling stole your zeal,
Church life has drained you dry;
You used to have such childlike faith,
Now budgets have your eye!

You used to be so passionate,
So innocent and free
Now you’ve become professional;
You’ll preach for a good fee!

Oh, set your sights on higher goals
And not on dollar bills.
Live in the light of Judgment Day;
Ambition always kills!

Let Jesus be your daily Guide,
Put Him where He belongs;
And soon His presence will arrive;
His praise will fill your songs!

Simplicity will be your style,
Devotion your new goal;
Communion will become your aim,
God’s life will flood your soul!

Oh, take your eyes off numbers,
Church growth can be a trap!
Go out and make disciples.
Go out and bridge the gap!

Pour your life out for broken lives --
Let God your heart break too.
Take up the cross, deny yourself;
Just live His will to do!

Wake up, be brave, be honest;
Today -- oh hear His voice!
Be ruthless with your schedule;
Seek GOD. Make that your choice.

You won’t find Him in your planner,
No committee has the key.
You’ll find Him when your soul cries out,
‘There must be more for me!’

‘There must be more than building funds,
And sessions past midnight,
And endless talks with leadership,
Disputing who is right.

Somehow I know I’ve been misled;
The model doesn’t work.
I’m not called as an executive,
Nor should I be a clerk.

I’m called to be a man of God,
A man who’s Spirit led,
A healer of the sick and lame
Someday to raise the dead!’

And with that cry new life will rise,
Your heart will be revived;
Heaven’s light will flood your soul --
You will not be denied!”

The parishioner then turned his gaze
Away from flesh and blood:
He looked to Him who sends the showers,
To Him who sends the flood.

“Today, O Lord, do hear our voice,
And pour Your Spirit out.
Saturate the thirsty ground.
End this spiritual drought!

Revive us with Your Presence,
Renew us from above;
Touch the flock called by Your name;
Come fill us with Your love!

Do greater works in our day,
Than that which You have done.
Bring the fullness of Your rains,
And glorify Your Son!”

That old church-goer spoke no more.
Another voice was heard.
Yet not the voice of flesh and blood:
It was our Father’s word.

And if you listen closely,
Beyond this little rhyme,
You’ll hear Him speaking clearly:
“My children, it is time.”

Christ is the Focus

I certainly have nothing against ‘spiritual experiences’, visions, prophecies and angelic visitations, as Father certainly utilizes them to make a major impact in our lives. However, true maturity is not a result of spiritual experiences, rather it comes from the everyday outworking of the character and nature of Christ in our lives. Christ, and Christ alone must be our primary focus in all things. Doug Fortune

The Colossian Heresy Revisited
While driving to class a few days ago I asked God for a theme for that day. I was teaching from the book of Colossians and had a vague idea where I was going, but desired more clarity about a theme for that lesson. As I prayed and worshiped, the phrase “Don’t Lose Your Focus” was strongly impressed upon my heart and mind. This phrase remained so pronounced in my heart that, at the beginning of the class, I wrote across the board in large letters “Don’t Lose Your Focus” and announced it as the theme for that lesson. I was then astounded at the sequence of events that unfolded.
As I taught that morning the Holy Spirit seemed to direct our attention to what New Testament scholars call “The Colossian Heresy.” Although I had taught on the subject before, on this particular day I seemed to receive new and fresh insight into the nature of this 1st century heresy. In essence, they had lost their focus on Christ. After the class was over I went to the main auditorium where a well-known guest speaker was addressing the student body. As I listened to this individual, who is well-known in the prophetic/apostolic movement, I was astounded to actually hear The Colossian Heresy, itself that I had just delineated, being propagated to the student body!
What was it that was distracting the Colossians and causing them to lose their focus? It was a preoccupation with their OWN spirituality. They were obsessed with how to be “spiritual” and had become enamored with supernatural phenomena such as visions and angelic visitations.
The Nature of the Colossian Heresy
The problem in Colosse was that the believers had lost their focus and were being distracted by other, even legitimate, things. Paul’s answer was to direct their attention back to Christ as the source and fullness of everything they needed. They did not need to look to some other source for knowledge of God, For in Him [Christ] dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (2:9). There was no need to look elsewhere for some plan or process for achieving spiritual maturity for, You are complete in Him who is the Head of all principality and power (2:10). They did not need to turn to other avenues for obtaining special wisdom and knowledge, for in Christ, Are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (2:3).
What was it that was distracting the Colossians and causing them to lose their focus? It was a preoccupation with their OWN spirituality. They were obsessed with how to be “spiritual” and had become enamored with supernatural phenomena such as visions and angelic visitations (2:18). In Col. 2:18 Paul refers to the worship of angels and what [the heretical teacher] has seen, i.e., visions (NIV). The word “worship” in this passage is a translation of the Greek word "threskia" which is not the normal word for “worship” in the New Testament. Besides Col. 2:18 it is found in only three other places in the New Testament, Acts 26:3 and James 1:26, 27, where it is translated as “religion.” The point seems to be that the Colossians had developed a “religious” fascination with angels and visions.
Why is this a problem? Their fascination with such sensational phenomena has distracted them from their one and only true Source, Jesus Christ. Because of their fascination with esoteric, sensational phenomena, they are no longer, Holding fast to the Head from whom all the body, nourished and knit together . . . grows with an increase that is from God (2:19). This is serious, for only by abiding in Christ and holding fast to Him can the Colossians experience the fullness of salvation and arrive at spiritual maturity.
To complicate matters, the spiritual experiences, with which they are so enamored, have become a basis for pride. They consider themselves a notch above other Christians because of their spiritual experiences. They are an elite group. Although they purport to be humble, it is a false humility that is betrayed by their attitudes and actions (2:18). Perhaps referring to their most prominent teacher, Paul says that this heretical teacher, like his followers, is vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind (2:18).
Has the Contemporary Prophetic Movement Lost Its Focus?
As I sat on the platform and listened to this “big name” guest speaker, I was amazed at how closely what I was hearing coincided with The Colossian Heresy that I had just delineated. This person talked almost exclusively of visions, prophecies and angelic visitations. This individual emphasized the importance of prayer, not for knowing Christ, but as a means of experiencing these sensational phenomena. Jesus certainly was not front and center and I am not even sure if He was mentioned! It was incredible! And it raised the very serious question in my mind, “Has the prophetic movement lost its focus?” Is the “The Colossian Heresy” being repeated?
Suggestions For Not Losing Our Focus
Keep Jesus at the center. Don’t seek an experience, seek Him. A woman came to William Seymour at the Azusa Street Mission and asked him to pray that she would get the tongues. He replied, “Now see here, Sister Sadie, don’t you go seeking tongues. Seek Jesus. He is the One.”
Let the supernatural happen, don’t try to make it happen. When Christians try to make the supernatural happen, they inevitably get in the flesh and open themselves to demonic spirits that are looking for an opportunity to give someone an experience.
Stay humble. Don’t allow spiritual experiences to become a basis for pride. Avoid an elitist attitude. After observing the collapse of several powerful, front-line ministers because of pride, Gordon Lindsay exhorted, “As one rises higher and higher in spiritual blessing and power, he must ever seek to become lower and lower and lower.”
I believe that we can expect even greater demonstrations of God’s power and blessing in the days ahead. We must not, however, lose our focus. We must avoid repeating “The Colossian Heresy.” Let us keep the words of Heb. 12:1b-2 before us, Let us run with endurance the race that is before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Amen!
